International Womens Day.

Logo is purple and white and features the symbol of Venus, which is also the symbol of being female.

Today March 8th 2012  is International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year and is a day to recognise and celebrate womens achievements throughout history and the world. International women's day  connects women Worldwide and hopefully inspires  us to achieve our full potentials.

Still in 2012 women all over the world are struggling, we still can not claim to have the same rights as men.
*30% to 40%  of women are  payed less then men
*women make up 60% of the 1.4 billion poor in the world
*Victims of violence and rape.
*Victims of religious persecutions
*Victims of domestic violence.
*Women and girls have the highest rate of educational poverty.

A lot of these factors lead to death among women worldwide. Concern Worlwide is a charity committed to empowering women living in poverty to make major improvements in their lives. They recognise that gender equality and women's rights are essential to advancing justice and ending global poverty. I believe that education empowers women and gives them choices. At the bottom of my page you will see a Social Vibe for Camfed to Educare girls in Africa. Readers earn days of schooling for girls in Africa. Check it out.

In Italy for the "Feste della Donne"  women receive bouquets of mimosa flowers from the males in the family, father, brother, son, husband, boyfriend to show their appreciation to the women in their family. Italian feminists after the World War 2  in 1946 chose the mimosa flower as a symbol of the holiday. It was chosen because it flowers in Italy in Spring much like our Cherry Blossom over here in Ireland. It's a pretty scented bright little yellow  flower.  Some brides will decorate their wedding cakes with it as well. Females of the family will greet an kiss each other and friends  and say "Auguri" Women in Italy prepare meals and cakes with the flowers like "Risotto Mimosa" and "Torta Mimosa". Ladies bake lemon sponges and ice them and lay the mimosa flowers on top as decoration.

I was lucky to have been part of the celebrations at one time. The ladies all get together and go for a meal and celebrate and can get quite loud. There is not a man in sight. It is a lovely tradition and i think women in Ireland should celebrate it as much as the Italian ladies do. Maybe we can use the Cherry Blossom flower instead. We should celebrate but not loose sight of what is happening to other  women less fortunate than us elsewhere.  Happy Women's Day to women all over the World. x :-)
